Bolton Wanderers manager Dougie Freedman has said that the club will not be breaking the bank in order to keep defender Marcus Alonso at the club. The Spaniard has been heavily linked with several clubs across Europe like Fiorentina, Swansea, and Celtic.
They have offered the player much better contract than he will earn at Bolton, which has resulted in speculation that Bolton might break the wage structure in to keep the player. Alonso has been one of the best players for Bolton over the years. Freedman has said that it is almost certain that the club will retain Stuart Holden for next season.
However, he refused to give the same commitment towards keeping Alonso at the club because there are several factors that the club should consider. Bolton have been one of the inform teams in the division over the last few months. As a result, the team, which looked like a relegation candidates early in the campaign, have been edging closer towards a play-off position. This is also one of the reasons behind Freedman refusing to commit. Bolton are unsure whether they will be playing in the Championship or Premier league next season. It is a conundrum for all the teams finishing in the play-offs position.
“He’s a fantastic fella to work with, and he’s looking around and seeing his options, but we’re in the hunt with everyone else. I won’t put the club’s financial position in jeopardy in terms of breaking the bank. I don’t think that’s right. A player will stay with me because he feels he will develop. I can’t change how I work with players. I won’t be irresponsible because I think that’s the right way to manage a football club. Stuart was offered a contract the day he went to Sheffield Wednesday and he has accepted it," said Freedman.
