Stewart Downing joined Blackburn Rovers last summer transfer window and manager Tony Mowbray has come out to heap praise on the former Liverpool man.
Although this is a great defiance from the days when players who made Blackburn rejoice were the likes of Michel Salgado and others of similar caliber, Stewart Downing is not totally feeble when it comes to contributing to the success of any team he has ever played in.
With players like Downing, clubs will always be interested in hiring him for his services until he officially hangs up his boot and upon leaving Middlesbrough last summer, the former England international opted to join out of every other club that chased his signature during the transfer window.
Thankfully for Rovers, Stewart Downing has been playing his part as a utility man along the wings and may even one day play in the position Michel Salgado did.
Like many clubs, Blackburn are relishing the luck of having a player who could substitute for in different positions. At this point, even the injury to Derrick Williams and Greg Cunningham will not be much of an issue since Rovers now have an experienced player that can roam into any position and hold his own.
Both Derrick and Greg are defenders but going by Downing’s form, something similar to what James Milner has become at Liverpool, playing in the backline of Rovers wouldn’t be much of an ask at this point.
Tony Mowbray who signed him from Middlesbrough couldn’t be prouder of his decision. According to the gaffer, Downing was a player he took keen interest in since he was at his former club.
Meeting him in person, gave him more conviction to sign the guy who primarily plays on the leftwing to come to Rovers and play anywhere he likes.
