Former Bolton Wanderers star Jay-Jay Okocha has said that the owners of the club are to blame for the club's relegation from the Premier league this season.
There has been absolutely no investment from the owners in the last few seasons, which has led to manager Owen Coyle looking at improving his squad by bringing in many players on loan deals.
The club were relegated from the Premier league after their 2-2 draw with Stoke city on the final day of the season. They could have stayed in the Premier league had they managed to hold onto their slender lead for the remainder of the second half.
Jay-Jay Okocha is one of the instantly recognisable former Bolton players after having been crucial to their success under the reign of Sam Allardyce. Since the departure of Allardyce back in 2007, Bolton have been on a steady decline.
Even under Allardyce, the owners were not willing to put money into the club. However, they were able to stay in the Premier league and overachieve due to the scientific techniques adopted by the current West Ham manager. Jay-Jay Okocha has said that the lack of funds for bringing in players has reduced over the years and it is mainly responsible for their relegation from the Premier league.
"We changed the image of the club. We established the club in the Premier League and we thought they would build from there. But all our efforts have been thrown away. It feels like all that work was wasted. I have been following the Premier League very closely because once you have been a footballer you have an affinity with the game. It was a sad season for Bolton but it was bound to happen. When you don't spend or invest in the future, you can't always get away with it," Okocha told reporters.
